After three years in Cologne, the Next Level Conference 2013 was held for the first time in the Dortmunder U. In December, the festival conference of the NRW KULTURsekretariat in its unique mix once again took account of artistic, educationally relevant and creative economic aspects of computer games. This time, the focus was on an international, first-class exhibition conceived and curated by the Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln (art university for media in Cologne). It showed perspectives of the debate on the medium of games and the activity of playing. The keynote address was given by well-known art theoretician Bazon Brock. Next Level 2013 was organised in collaboration with the NRW Ministry of Youth and Ministry of Economics as well as the city of Dortmund. In 2014, Next Level will again question the changes of our perception and of entire social areas through the interactive and participative models of digital gaming culture.

next-level.org serves as an extensive year-round information portal on the art and culture of digital games. Since its relaunch in summer 2013, the website can also be accessed from mobile devices. In addition to many qualified blog articles, the website also offers further features and links, such as a sophisticated schedule overview of different events on digital gaming culture in the German-speaking countries. next-level.org is being continuously expanded into an interactive communication platform for actors from various scenes – and also provides information on actors and programme offerings in time for the next conference.
