Dance Research NRW

An international scholarship programme for choreographers and dancers

“Tanzrecherche NRW” (Dance Research NRW) was set up as a very special international scholarship programme by the NRW KULTURsekretariat at the beginning of 2009 and is enjoying increasing international popularity. It offers dancers, choreographers, performers and musicians the possibility to work and do research in NRW for several weeks. More than 130 teams of scholarship holders from around the world applied for the last three Dance Research events from May to July 2013 in Bielefeld, Neuss and Cologne.

“Dance Research NRW” is not production-orientated and therefore differs from many other sponsorship models in the field of dance. Instead, the focus lies on the intensive promotion of artistic work. The Kultursekretariat supports the scholarship holders through its network. It moderates the stays as the supporting central point of contact and arranges meetings and discussions with artists and cultural institutions from across a wide range of disciplines and research facilities.

Rent-free accommodation for 1 – 2 people and personal support, mentoring and presentation are provided. Scholarship holders can be awarded up to 7,500 Euros, depending on the project, its duration and the nature and scope of their research. The results and findings will be publicly presented in the host city. The scholarship holders are selected by a jury that was reformed at the end of 2013 with Madeline Ritter, Vera Sander and Eckhard Thiemann.

Each Dance Research is orientated towards a location-specific motto. For 2014, two Dance Research events will be offered between August and November. “Dance Research NRW” #14 in Dortmund concentrates on localisation and navigation in the space. The partner is the “Favoriten” theatre festival 2014. The “Dance Research NRW” #15 in Düsseldorf focuses on a current view of the relationship between dance and music. Participating partners are tanzhaus nrw, the Weltkunstzimmer and the Hans Peter Zimmer Stiftung.
