Culture connects

The NRW KULTURsekretariat - the biggest communal sponsor of culture in North-Rhine-Westphalia, the "Land of cities"

The NRW KULTURsekretariat is a public, intercommunal cultural grants initiative of the 21 major cities and a regional association in North Rhine-Westphalia. Since 1974, working with partners in the community, it has initiated, organised and promoted innovative projects, festivals and programmes of events in the fields of theatre, music, the visual arts, literature, dance and new media. It also stimulates cultural-political processes and dialogue within the association network, and enhances cultural competence by arranging conferences and conventions on relevant issues of the day. The Kultursekretariat has coordinated and steered the International Visitors Programme since the beginning of 2009. This brings journalists, curators, artists, cultural educators and politicians to NRW from all over the world to work together on creating supportive networks and collaborations, which are eligible for grants.

The NRW KULTURsekretariat comprises a team of permanent employees and freelancers who organise and coordinate the programme work in close collaboration with the individual cultural partners – accompanied by work committees, selection committees, advisory committees and juries. A regular conference with the heads of departments from the member cities approves the budget and the programme (Chairman: Martin Schumacher, Bonn; Deputy Chairman: Jörg Stüdemann, Dortmund).
